"A. It is a country and no country. With only the briefest official recognition years ago, it nevertheless persists in minds, and even maintains legations. Its stony name bears the trace of an element used to treat some manias.
Q. What is Lithuania?"
--Joe Ashby Porter, epigraph of Lithuania
Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Name: Lithuania (Toris Laurinaitis)
Age: Physically 19, actually 1000 (The first written mention of Lithuania was in 1009.)
Gender: Male
Appearance: The first thing one notices about Lithuania is his kind, unassuming face – the face of one that would not hurt even a fly. Though he is obviously not innocent, to be sure, but the profundity of his tragic past is somehow hinted at in the recondite peace and pathos hanging about him. In what there is of the manga he has fairly dark brown hair that brushes his shoulders, long, parted bangs that sweep off to the side, thin eyebrows, and large, green eyes. Even as the oldest and largest of the Baltic State brothers, Lithuania does not have an impressive physical presence. Overall, his appearance gives one the sense that he is effete and quiet, probably even easy to get along with (and easy to step on).
In terms of style, like most other Nation-tans Lithuania wears a sort of military uniform, though his is less elaborate than some of the other nations'. His tielocken coat is a shade of green that compliments his eyes and is belted at the waist by a brown belt. On either breast is a pocket, and at his throat is visible the collar of a white dress shirt and a tie that is a third shade of green. His pants are the same green as his coat, and are tucked into the brown boots. And he does wear a frilly apron when he is living with America.
Personality: Summed up, Lithuania is a quiet and resilient worker who cares deeply for other people and little for himself. He has a surprisingly strong determination that shines most brilliantly in battle, and at that time he is a superb leader who can keep the morale of his troubles inordinately high. But war is war, and often Lithuania is doing something for someone else with little thought of the profit he can gain for himself. As such, if someone were to ever ask something of him, he would most likely not hesitate to do his best in doing it. And while not overly reserved, he is more introverted than extroverted.
In particular, it is this kind of attitude – “let me help you” – that has allowed him to do well with so many of the nations he has known. For example, Poland is very concerned for himself and quite dense. Lithuania and he are still somehow friends, however, even when Poland did nothing to help when Lithuania was taken by Russia. But this is a bit of a complicated matter, since when Lithuania remembers Poland and all that has happened between them in the past he becomes frustrated enough to yell out. Still, when he thinks of Poland he expresses worry and wistfulness – tender, though muddled, emotions. In one instance of the latter, Lithuania grows peaceful and falls asleep in America's bed as he remembers the simple halcyon days when he was a farming commonwealth with Poland. And he continues to worry about Poland even when he continues to not take the situation seriously. Lithuania's patience is not limited to nations, however, as is evident by how hard he works. He can also keep house. When he does this for America for a while, he cheers that he loves such a life that happens to be free of Russia.
Of strength, Lithuania has plenty. He has survived Russia, after all, though he is afraid of this other. Which is understandable, since Russia has abused Lithuania. A streak of tremulous fear seems quite remarkable considering that he has scars on his back from Russia. But because of this fear, he will correct what he says lest he displease Russia and risk God-knows-what. This trait also shows up at other times, in slightly different ways; he is as awkwardly diplomatic as possible when he thinks that someone else has a strange or bad idea. Though, when asked, he will offer good advice and what support he can.
Generally, Lithuania tends to see the best in others rather than their flaws. Not that he is blind to them, however. Comparatively, he is one of the saner nations, and really does have his wits about him. Perhaps a little self-preservation would not hurt him, though, as well as keep him out of abusive and parasitic relationships. And, dependable, he comes through for others in a pinch, as he does when he saves Poland at the last moment in 1410 in the last battle against the Teutonic Order.
Particulars: As a nation-tan, Lithuania does not have the same physiology as humans. When there is something wrong within his country he is adversely affected. For example it is not clear if Nation-tans actually need to consume food, though they do, but at times like the Great Depression when their economies and people are suffering they are hungry and ragged. Also, they age quite differently, way more slowly than humans, as is appropriate for a nation.
Strange as it is, the Nation-tans have houses and households, the latter of which often consists of countries the nation has conquered or in essence owns. They also are heavily influenced by humans in the sense that they simply do as their leaders desire (or tell them to, in some cases.) For instance, Hitler. The Germany Nation-tan does not have anything against the Jews, but merely follows the orders of his leader/government.
War: This is the guy that one wants on his or her side in a war. As a leader he is excellent, and has a firm grip on his troops, whom he inspires and keeps in very high spirits. Also very loyal and pointedly determined, Lithuania would be hard pressed to even think of abandoning a friend, much less anyone, in need. He also likes martial arts, though he is not shown to utilise them when he does fight.
Cuisine: Apparently Lithuania is very particular about the taste of his food and will use many flavours of mayonnaise and ketchup. Also, he can very well cook his own food.
Literature: Lithuania is a fan of literature, and in terms of scholarship Lithuania has a pretty good history. Though for some time there was no printing press in Lithuania thanks to Russia outlawing it.
Etc: He is called “Liet” by Poland as a nickname. Also, Russia says that Lithuania is his ex, though the details on this are vague at best, but there is more than likely something there since after the the partition from Poland he has been living in Russia's house. He also lives with his brothers Latvia and Estonia, both of whom are also fearful of Russia.
Canon History:
Crux: To take advantage of the damage done to what will be an inevitable threat, the rest of the Allies decide to launch an invasion against Russia.
Tangent: Though the invasion fails and dissipates, the Russian fervor does not. Russia, in a kind of drunken state, becomes more vicious and thorough with his Sovietisation – and soon the Soviet influence is rapidly spreading throughout Europe, and he becomes engrossed with many things, including moving into the Middle East. It is at this time that Lithuania, in increasingly worse shape, senses his chance. With his people being daily deported in favour of Russian workers, and the rest starving because of Russia's abuse of his resources, Lithuania decides to seek out new lands, perhaps a place for his increasingly displaced people, perhaps a strong someone to ally with him and Poland.
Of course he somewhat broaches this to Russia, as fearful of the other even more than ever. If he gets his permission, after all, isn't it an order? So, after a vague nod from Russia and some praise, Lithuania determinedly departs for Soeldei.
Allegiance: Congeries
